Okay, it's about time I got back into posting stuff here regularly.
Here's my plan: I will post artwork+words (if I feel so inclined)+some source of inspiration, on a regular basis. I will stick to it this time. Yes I will.

「これからはもっと頻繁に更新します」
と今まで何度宣言したことでしょう。

「うつウーマン」第２弾

またマンガを描かせていただきました。

２年前に出版された「わたしは働くうつウーマン」につづく第２弾！

今度は躁うつ病と診断され入院することに。

そんな安部さんの精神科の閉鎖病棟での体験を綴るコミックエッセイです。

あまり知られていない精神病棟の世界をご紹介

決してハッピーな場所ではないけれど

映画で観るような

一度入ったら出られなくなりそうなただ暗いイメージの場所

というわけではないのです

ご興味がある方は

 I had the honor of creating another comic book

with writer, Abe-san, who formerly suffered from clinical depression

about which the first book was.

After being told by her doctor that her depression has gone into "remission"

and enjoying a spell of depression-free days

she began suffering from strange episodes of intense euphoria and agitation.

The doctor gave her a new diagnosis--bipolar disorder--

and recommended that she be hospitalized.

This comic book is about her experience of spending 40 days

in a psychiatric ward.

Not the happiest of topics 

but I hope this book will help to dispel the common notion that 

a psychiatric ward is a dark and scary place 

with creepy, hopeless patients and mean, unsympathetic nurses.

This March 11 marks the first year anniversary of the great earthquake/tsunami/nuclear power plant disaster that hit northeastern Japan.

Many still suffer from the aftereffects. Many things still yet to be done. Many things to learn from it.

In commemoration, a group of artists will be gathering in Kamakura to create a painting in memory of the victims and for hope for the future. It will be held at Cafe Magokoro, where a group exhibition CHOICE 2 is currently taking place and I am lucky to be a part of. 

Live music by Makiyo. Free of charge. Starts at 7 pm. 

(Closest station: Hase, on the Enoden train)

Hope you will be there. I will be there in spirit!

Happy Year of the Dragon!

あっという間に２０１２年

明けましておめでとうございます

なぜだかわからないけれど

とってもいい年になる気がします

そんなわくわくな気持ちで

新年を迎えました

みなさんにたくさんの幸せがありますように

今年もよろしくお願いします

I know this is going to be a good year.

I can just feel it.

Many people say this at the beginning of the year, I suspect.

But I, for one, have never felt this

giddy and excited about a new year.

I hope it will be a fabulous year for everyone

filled with lots of laughter and happy moments.

Surfboard

Painted live on a surfboard 

at an outdoor event in Shimokitazawa.

(To get an idea of what "Shimo" is like, go to this very cool blog.)

The board stayed at the venue as its storefront sign for several months.

My photographer friend, Tsucamera

was kind enough to take it to a beach in Chiba to photograph it.

I have to say

it looks so much more at home at the beach than in the city, 

naturally!

KEISONのポートレートはブッチャーさんによるもの

見ればすぐわかる人も大勢いるはず

その周りを飾らせていただきました

今回は初めて

ブッチャーさんのチョークをお借りして

As you may know

Butcher-san draws portraits

and I have the honor of painting around them

This was my first attempt at

using Butcher-san's chalk collection of 3 colors plus charcoal.

I like how the colors pop out much more

than the markers that I'd been using for a while.

オープニングパーティ

たくさんの方がTシャツを展示しました。

企画は「はちどり食堂」のオーナーなおみさんと

アーチストのKIBOKO

屋外で

Sasrise、しんちゃん、Yuriwaのライブ＆ライブペンティング

はちどり食堂さんのおいしいお食事

「はちどり」のモチーフのライブペインティングは

KIBOKOとの合作♪

そしてできあがった作品は

なおみさんがお買い上げくださいました。

The opening party for an T-shirt exhibition that was held on Sept. 25

was great fun 

and success.

T-shirts made by artists, athletes, yogi, etc.

were gathered at this restaurant

and put on display.

Painted the above image of a hachidori (humming bird)

live with my artist buddy KIBOKO.

who was also one of the planners of this event.

Sasrise, Shinchan, and Yuriwa 

played their usual wonderful songs.

And the painting was sold!!

I also sold the above hand-painted Tshirt.

And received an additional order!

Hironobu Saito New York Quartet @ Sweet Basil, Roppongi

It's been over a month, I'm afraid.

Was invited to paint live at a show by

Hironobu Saito New York Quartet

at Sweet Basil.

Was an amazing show.
Felt so high at times and that my hand had a mind of its own.

Musicians from the US--Milton Fletcher(p),
Marco Panascia(b), John "Lil John" Lumpkin(ds)--
 were so talented and 

all had such warm and open personalities.

Guest artists were Tony Guppy, Toku, and Motoharu.
I loved the Formentera Sea sung by Toku.

一ヶ月も前ですが。

9月１８日

六本木スイートベイジルにて

西藤ヒロノブ・ニューヨーク・カルテット
のライブにてライブペインティングをしました。

ゲスト： Tony Guppy、Toku、元晴さん

テンション高い音でハイになって別世界に連れて行かれるときも。

始まる前にピアニストのミルトンが

「どういう絵になるか想像して言葉で書いておく」

と言って

終わった後に見せてもらいました。

１０ぐらいあった中で覚えているのは

「海、黄色、オレンジ、流れる」
おお〜と思った私ですが

でも彼はなぜか「全然違った。。」と。

頭の中の絵のイメージとは離れていたんでしょうね。

みなさんとても暖かい方たちでした

Artists will be selling their handmade T-shirts

On the evening of the 25th,

KIBOKO and I will be doing a joint live painting performance, too.

Friend and professional body boarder Yumie has organized 

a wonderful event for the children of TOHOKU

"Aketara Umi E"

("When the sun comes up, let’s go to the beach.")

I will be taking part as a live painter.

Proceeds from the event will go towards 

"Happy Surf School"

which Yumie will run in Chiba.

Children affected by the March 11 disaster in the Tohoku region

will be invited to this school free of charge

and learn how to surf and body board,

and all the wonderful things about the ocean.

3月11日に起きた震災で『海を怖がり、嫌う子供達』

が増えて来ているという事実に対して


プロボディーボーダーのYumieちゃんが発起人となり

東北の海が安全に入れる様になった時に

子供達が怖がる事無く海を受け入れ、再び遊ぶコトができるように

(海の危険なところもちゃんと教えつつ)


海の素晴らしさを体感してほしいという想いから

東北又は被災した方々を千葉の御宿海岸に招待し

ボディボード、サーフィンを体験してもらう

『 Happy Surf School 』を企画しています。

このチャリティースクールを実現させる為のイベント！

６回目のワイト・ロック・ミーティングは

（１）大仏ハンターのクロスケさん

（楽しいスライドショーとともに日本中の大仏＆大仏話を紹介）

（２）おなじみベリーダンサーの睡蓮

（３）フレア・バーテンダーのシュートくん

「出演者の要素を取り入れた絵を描いて」

というワイトのトースケくんからのいきなりのリクエスト。

いつもは無意識のところか描くのだけど、

今回は慣れないことをしたからか、

。。。疲れた。

（１）真ん中の花が仏教の曼荼羅

（２）下のピンクは睡蓮の花

（３）周りの白い輪はジャグリング

そんなイメージです。

結構受けがよくて。

お客さまの方がお買い上げくださいました。

いちはしさん、ありがとうございました！

The guest performers for this event:

(1) Kurosuke "the Daibutsu Hunter"

(Gave a talk about all the interesting daibutsu's around Japan) 

(2) Suiren, belly dancer, and 

(3) Shuto, flair bartender

A minute before I began painting, 

Tousuke of Wight Rock Babys asked me to include the above three in my painting.

So:

(1) The giant central flower is part of a Buddhist mandala

(2) Pink flower below is a suiren, or lotus flower, and 

(3) the white circles are things being thrown up in the air

This painting was sold and is currently

hanging in Mr. Ichihashi's home. 

これまでのライブペインティング

最近のライブペインティングの作品を

あまりアップしてきていないので、

ここで少しずつ載せていきたいと思ってます

まずは一番最近のものを。

７月１２日

おなじみワイトロック・ミーティング Vol.7

おまえはワイト・ロック・ベイビーズのメンバーか！？

というぐらい何度もジョインさせてもらってますが

ワイトの音楽はとても好き

はじめCDで聴いたときは

正直言っちゃうと「んー」という程度の反応だったの

（ワイト、ごめん！）

でも聴けば聴くほど味が出て今ではかなり好き

とはいえ、そんなのは私だけで

他の人は

初めて聴いたときから「すごくよかった！」という反応が多いね

とにかくうきうきさせてくれて

ペインティングするにはもってこいの音です

実はこの日

気持ちがあまりついてきてくれなくて

出来については少し複雑な気持ちだったんだけど

そうしたらワイトのトースケくんが

「そうか、俺もなんかぞぞぞってくる」

って言っていたの

なぜかその反応はちょっと嬉しかった

The latest shown here is one I painted at the 7th Wight Rock Meeting

a monthly event put on by Wight Rock Babys

for which they invite artists of all types to collaborate with them,

this time an accordion player, a rakugo comedian, 

Shin-chan of Rocking Norus,

and me

but I'm not sure if I count, really

since I've been there at almost every "Meeting." 

I have to say

おととい、行ってきました

Went to Ibaraki Prefecture to visit Angin

A very cool Asian furniture store run by my friend, Soichiro.

He invited me to bring some of my artwork to sell at his store.

ハードコア・サーファーでもあるそうくんの

お店の場所は茨城県の海からすぐのところ

Soichiro is a hardcore surfer

so naturally, his store is right by the beach.

私が事前に送ってあった絵を飾るスペースをつくっておいてくれて

かけ方などをあーだこーだ一緒に考えてくれました

He helped me figure out how best to display my paintings

and put them up.

small pieces of artwork and greeting cards.
